Barra Vieja - A Serene Escape

Barra Vieja is a long, tranquil stretch of sandy beach located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Acapulco, just beyond the airport. Stepping onto this beach feels like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse of what Acapulco might have been like in the 1950s and earlier. Thanks to its relative remoteness, Barra Vieja attracts far fewer partiers and spring breakers, making it a favorite destination for couples and families seeking peace and relaxation.

As you drive along the coastal road, you’ll notice signs pointing to various restaurants and “beach clubs.” These are typically located a few hundred feet down dirt paths that lead to the ocean. Many locals stand by the roadside, eagerly inviting passing cars to their establishments.

It’s worth doing some research and asking for recommendations before you go, especially if no one in your group speaks Spanish. There are excellent options both on the way to Barra Vieja village and within the village itself. If you reach the lagoon, you’ve gone too far.

What to Expect at Barra Vieja Beach Clubs

The beach clubs and restaurants in Barra Vieja typically follow a familiar layout. Upon arrival, you’ll find ample parking. Closer to the ocean, there’s usually a bar and restaurant under a large palm palapa or a sturdy metal roof. Many venues also feature modern swimming pools with facilities for showering and changing clothes.

Beyond the pool area, you’ll find cozy palapas or cabanas, many equipped with hammocks. Visitors can choose their preferred spot—whether at the restaurant, by the pool, or on the beach itself. Most opt for the beach to enjoy stunning ocean views, take leisurely strolls along the shore, or bask in the sun by the gentle waves.

Restaurants offer service at the beach, poolside, or in the dining area. Menus are rich with seafood options prepared in various ways, alongside snacks and refreshing beverages. Unlike the bustling beaches of Acapulco, Barra Vieja is remarkably serene, with very few vendors interrupting your relaxation.

Activities and Attractions

Barra Vieja offers more than just a picturesque escape. Nearby, a local conservation camp is dedicated to raising and protecting sea turtles, making it a worthwhile visit, especially for families with kids. During certain seasons (typically around 5:30 pm), visitors can witness the magical release of baby turtles into the ocean.

For adventure seekers, activities like ATV rides, horseback riding along the beach, and exploring the surrounding areas are popular options. Or, you can simply lounge on the sand, enjoy a soothing beach massage, or order a bucket of beers and watch the sun dip below the horizon.

With its peaceful atmosphere, delicious food, and opportunities for both relaxation and adventure, Barra Vieja is a hidden gem that offers a refreshing contrast to the hustle and bustle of Acapulco’s more crowded beaches.
