Acapulco Sports & Spectator Activities

Here are some of the top sports and spectator activities in Acapulco:

Acapulco Sports

Acapulco is home to several sports teams and impressive facilities where you can watch exciting games and competitions throughout the year.

Unidad Deportiva de Acapulco (UDA)

Located in the Progreso district, the Unidad Deportiva de Acapulco (UDA) is a state-of-the-art sporting complex that hosts various events. The UDA features a baseball diamond, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a diving tank, and a soccer field with a capacity of 6,600 spectators on each side. This venue is used for various sports events, including boxing, Lucha Libre, and even live musical concerts. It's also the home field for the Acapulco Manta Rays, a Division III soccer team.

The Acapulco Manta Rays

The Manta Rays were established in 2003 and have been a key part of Acapulco’s sports culture. They enjoyed immediate success, with their first season boasting an 11-4-2 record and winning opening tournaments in both 2003 and 2004. They are part of Division III, Group III soccer in Mexico. Another local soccer team, Club de Fútbol Galgos, also competes at the Division III level, based in Ciudad Renacimiento on the outskirts of Acapulco.

Fútbol Rápido (Indoor Soccer)

Acapulco became the home of the Jaguars in 2009, a Division I team in fútbol rápido, or indoor soccer. The Jaguars, originally from Cancún, now play to passionate fans in Acapulco. Indoor soccer is a fast-paced game, and Acapulco has become a key destination for fans of this exciting sport.

Acapulco’s International Tennis and Beach Volleyball Tournaments

Acapulco is also a major stop on the international sports circuit. The city hosts the Mexican Open Tennis Tournament every year at the Mextenis Stadium in Acapulco Diamante. The tournament attracts top-tier tennis players from around the world, with a crowd capacity of 6,000 fans. Additionally, Acapulco is the venue for the International Beach Volleyball Tournament, part of the World Tour of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). Both men's and women’s divisions participate, showcasing incredible athleticism and fierce competition.

Jai-Alai

Known as the "world's fastest game," Jai-Alai is a thrilling sport that can be seen at the Bingo Sports Book building across from the Hyatt Regency. The game involves two or four players who use a curved wooden basket, or "cesta," to hurl a rubber ball at high speeds against a wall. The fast-paced action and strategic play make it a favorite among fans, especially in Acapulco where the game is growing in popularity. Jai-Alai was invented over 400 years ago in Spain's Basque Country and has since spread throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. Notably, Jai-Alai is one of the few sports that does not permit left-handed players (the other being polo).

Fashion Shows

Acapulco also hosts elegant fashion shows throughout the year, featuring top Mexican and international models. These glamorous events showcase the latest fashion trends and attract elite designers, photographers, and celebrities. Fashion lovers can enjoy an exciting spectacle of runway shows set against Acapulco's stunning backdrop, making for a chic and stylish experience. The city’s vibrant atmosphere adds to the allure of these exclusive events.

Other Spectator Sports

In addition to Jai-Alai, tennis, beach volleyball, and soccer, Acapulco is also home to other exciting spectator sports and cultural experiences.

Lucha Libre

For those looking for a true Mexican experience, Lucha Libre (Mexican professional wrestling) is a must-see. Acapulco hosts regular Lucha Libre matches, where masked wrestlers engage in high-flying, dramatic performances.
