Pie de la Cuesta - Acapulco's Virgin Beach

Tucked away in the natural beauty of the Acapulco area, Pie de la Cuesta is a true hidden gem, offering visitors a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Along with Puerto Marqués, Pie de la Cuesta is one of the most serene and picturesque spots in the region, where nature's charm takes center stage.

The Journey There: A Scenic Drive

The drive to Pie de la Cuesta is an experience in itself, almost as enjoyable as the destination. As you leave the city behind, the road winds through Guerrero's idyllic countryside. Along the way, you can stop to sample the freshest tropical fruits, purchased directly from friendly locals, and see farmers with their donkeys, calmly making their way down the dusty roads under the golden sun. This peaceful countryside is a world away from urban life, offering glimpses of rural Mexico at its most authentic.

Pie de la Cuesta: Miles of Tranquil Beach

Pie de la Cuesta is essentially an endless stretch of tranquil beach, bordered on one side by the wild, open Pacific Ocean, and on the other by the serene Coyuca Lagoon—a freshwater lake that is three times larger than Acapulco Bay. The lagoon is home to several small islands and a former banana plantation, providing a peaceful haven for nature lovers, photographers, and birdwatchers alike. The scenery is a photographer's dream, with the sparkling lagoon on one side and the rugged oceanfront on the other.

Many of the area’s hotels and tourist attractions are located near the entrance to Pie de la Cuesta, on the Acapulco side, but as you continue north, you’ll find an entirely different, more primitive side of the area. Driving along the road that runs the length of the beach, you’ll pass mile after mile of untouched landscape, before reaching Barra de Coyuca, where the lagoon meets the sea. This secluded drive offers a true sense of freedom, and while speed bumps (locally known as "topes") may slow you down, they only encourage you to take your time and fully enjoy the views. Think of this road as a 10-mile-long cul-de-sac, a hidden escape that feels worlds away from the city.

Meet the Locals: A Charming Tradition

While exploring Pie de la Cuesta, you might encounter a unique local tradition. In the villages, young girls often stretch a thin white string across the road and raise it to windshield level as cars approach. This string signals an invitation for passersby to stop and donate to their school fund. If you stop, you’ll be greeted by a friendly group of children who will happily ask for your support. It’s a charming way to connect with the local community while helping a good cause.

The Ocean at Pie de la Cuesta: Majestic but Wild

The mighty Pacific Ocean at Pie de la Cuesta is a sight to behold, but it’s more for admiration than for swimming. The waves here can be huge and violent, making it difficult for even the most experienced swimmers to enjoy the water safely. The surf is unpredictable, so it's best to watch from the shore and marvel at the power of the ocean. It’s a perfect spot for beachcombing, taking in the view, or simply relaxing on the sand.

How to Get There

By Taxi or Bus: Pie de la Cuesta is easily accessible by taxi, bus, or car. If you’re traveling by taxi, you’ll be dropped off at the entrance, and from there, you can explore the area. Colectivos (shared taxis) are available from near the Zócalo in the area behind Sanborn’s, and they’re a convenient and affordable option. To catch a bus to Pie de la Cuesta, head to the intersection of the Via Rápida and Costera just west of downtown Acapulco. From here, buses to Pie de la Cuesta depart frequently.

By Car: If you prefer to drive, head north from Acapulco along the coast towards Pie de la Cuesta. The drive is scenic and well-maintained, offering plenty of opportunities to take in the stunning coastal views along the way.

How to Get Back

Returning from Pie de la Cuesta can be a bit tricky, especially later in the evening. Taxis are often available around the entrance, but if you're feeling adventurous, you may even catch a ride in the back of a pickup truck with some of the locals. Buses also stop at the entrance, but their frequency decreases as the day turns to night. Plan ahead to ensure a smooth return.

Where to Stay

Pie de la Cuesta offers a variety of accommodation options to suit different tastes and budgets. From rustic beachside lodges to upscale options, there is something for everyone. If you’re looking for a truly laid-back experience, consider camping on the beach, or even spending the night under the stars—many visitors feel at home just sleeping on the sand as the sound of the waves lulls them to sleep.

Pie de la Cuesta is a hidden paradise that offers the perfect balance of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether you're looking to disconnect from city life, explore untouched beaches, or simply soak in the incredible scenery, Pie de la Cuesta promises an unforgettable experience.
