The Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra

The Acapulco Philharmonic Orchestra (OFA) is one of the port city's most cherished cultural assets. Supported entirely by a government grant, its concerts are free to the general public. Most performances take place in the 1,000-seat Juan Ruiz de Alarcón Theater within the International Convention Center of Acapulco, located in Costa Azul. Established in 1998, the OFA features 85 talented and experienced professional musicians, delivering a rich and artful orchestral sound that easily rivals larger urban orchestras.

Under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Alvarez, the OFA presents approximately 24 concerts annually in Acapulco, in addition to over 60 concerts for children and performances in other venues. Half an hour prior to each concert, Maestro Alvarez takes the stage to engage the audience in the tradition of Leonard Bernstein. He provides insightful listening tips and explains details about the featured program and instruments.

The OFA's repertoire includes baroque and classical period works, but their strong suit is romantic music, beginning with Beethoven and extending into the modern era. They also perform traditional Mexican music and compositions by contemporary composers, such as George Gershwin. Their romantic and popular music selections allow all 85 musicians to shine, playing with great expression under the creative leadership of Maestro Alvarez. Distinguished soloists are frequently invited to enhance the performances.
