Formation and History

The caverns were formed millions of years ago when limestone rock was deposited by a primordial sea that once covered the region. Over time, dripping and flowing water shaped the vaulted rooms and created the colorful, majestic stalactites and stalagmites that now adorn the chambers and pathways.

For centuries, the caverns were inhabited by Chontal and Olmec tribes, who used them as shelter and for religious ceremonies, taking advantage of their natural beauty and protective structure.

Exploring the Caverns

While the true extent of the caverns remains unknown, visitors are allowed to explore just over 1.2 miles (2 km), which are well-lit and easy to navigate. Spelunkers have explored up to 6 miles (10 km), but a definitive end has yet to be reached.

The ceilings in the public areas range from 33 to 98 feet (10 to 30 meters) high. The caverns contain 90 chambers, some with natural lighting. Many formations resemble faces, animals, fountains, or even figures, making the experience both awe-inspiring and imaginative.

Two famous chambers are "The Throne Room" and "The Cathedral," both showcasing nature’s artistry as water erosion sculpted the limestone over millennia. Despite the weather outside, the caverns maintain a constant, cool temperature with moist air, while the pathways remain dry.
